Activism & academia: discussing actions for climate justice - film screening and panel discussion

This event brings together academia and activism in the same room. Professor Sharon Friel, director of the Hothouse, will be in conversation with Rising Tide activists, discussing the role of academia and activism in addressing climate change and fighting for climate justice. The discussion will follow the screening of Turning the Ship, the 2024 People’s Blockade documentary telling the story of the passion and drive leading to the block the World’s largest coal port. The event is in-person only. 

Rising Tide is co-hosting this event with the Hothouse.

Aoibhinn Crimmins

Aoibhinn Crimmins

Aoibhinn is a local climate justice activist, community organiser and environmental campaigner. She was one of the leads of the 2019 global school strikes for climate in Canberra and around the country. Aoibhinn currently works as campaigner for the Conservation Council ACT Region, and volunteers to growing the Rising Tide and Greens movements here in Canberra and across Australia.

Nick Abel

Honorary Associate Professor Nick Abel

Nick's 21 year career with CSIRO ended in 2016 after he told ABC audiences about cuts to climate science, and for leaking inside financial information to politicians. The ANU Fenner School enabled Nick to continue research on adaptation to climate change, alongside which he engages in research-based climate activism.

Professor Sharon Friel

Sharon Friel is an ARC Laureate Fellow and Professor of Health Equity in the School of Regulation and Global Governance. She is Director of the Planetary Health Equity Hothouse and Australian Research Centre for Health Equity (ARCHE) at the Australian National University.
